In the quaint town of Conconully, the annual Conconully Outhouse Races are a lively and unique tradition that takes center stage each January.
The event, which draws both locals and visitors, has become a much-anticipated occasion filled with laughter and friendly competition.
The origins of the race date back several decades when a group of friends decided to create a fun and lighthearted way to celebrate their town and boost tourism during the cold winter months. They transformed outhouses into racing contraptions, and the idea quickly caught on. What started as a small gathering has since grown into a beloved event that brings the community together year after year.
The 44th annual Conconully Outhouse Races will be held on January 18 on Main Street.
Registration and outhouse inspections will take place from 9 a.m. to 11 a.m. in front of the Conconully Community Hall, with a registration fee required. Each team must consist of three members: two pushers and one rider. Outhouses must meet certain criteria, including being mounted on skis, having a push bar, and containing a toilet seat and toilet paper.
The event includes a variety of categories, such as men (age 18-plus), women (18-plus), children (7-12), teens (13-17), family (all members must be related), seniors (combined age of 150-plus), bucket (pushers wear buckets on their heads), commercial (for local and out-of-town businesses), clydesdale (team members must each weigh more than 200 pounds), X-treme (featuring an obstacle course).
With nearly two-dozen outhouses typically participating and more than 1,000 spectators, the Conconully Outhouse Races offer a fun, quirky way to embrace community spirit during the winter months.
